Wednesday Wisdom; Beoordelen

Judging a person does not define who they are...
It defines who you are.

Ik ben ik, take it or leave it.

It's a work in progress.

Brief aan mijn jongere zelf tien jaar geleden

Lieve Kaat,

Geloof me!

Hou nog even vol! Je kunt het! Geloof meer in jezelf. Hou van jezelf. En vooral; vertrouw op jezelf.

Liefs,

Ik. ❤

ADHD

Realist

Ever since I've started working on myself all those years ago I thought I was on the right path. I diverted once in while but still I was doing great. I let myself be distracted often, I blame my adhd as well, or perhaps my menopause and all the things that come along with it, but still I was on the way to being Mindfull and causiously optimistic about that.

There have been times I've been down and very pessimistic about everything but all in all I always saw myself as a very happy optimistic person. But lately more and more I find myself shaking my head when I read something (today it was about a moon eclipse and how it would effect so many people ) and thinking what utter nonsense it is. Of course I still believe in the power of the Universe and that everything is connected but some overdo it.

In little things I notice it as well; every time one of my sons was taking a girl home I just knew if she would be gone soon or not and when they asked me afterwards what I'd think they already saw it on my face (sorry, my face can't lie) and every time I was right even though they said I wouldn't be.

At work meetings, I'm the one with the 'big mouth' who says the things everyone is thinking but no one is daring to say. I know they don't like it very much, but someone has to say it right?
If nothing else I am honest.
I always am prepared whenever we go away, when no one else think to take certain things with them, I have it. That's not being pessimistic, it's realistic.
I try to avoid drama at all costs, because drama consists mostly of people acting irrationally, and that irritates me to no end.
The 'I told you so' is on the tip of my tongue a lot... ;-)

On the other hand; me worrying so much sometimes isn't a realistic trade. Or wanting your life to have gone a certain way that it's not. So perhaps that too needs a little more work. I've come a long way and I'm certain that one day I will be there.

Taking time for yourself

Yesterday I was visiting a friend I hadn't seen in a while. We had a wonderful afternoon together and talked about what happened in our lives. At one point I told her that I found myself to be somewhat of a titmouse and I felt I hadn't been very social lately. She felt that you sometimes needed time for yourself to work out the things that were going on in your own life, that you couldn't be there for someone if you had too much on your own mind.

She's right of course but still I always feel guilty whenever I haven't spoken to people who I think I should have contacted. That's probably the first step; Stop feeling guilty for taking time for yourself.
Taking care of yourself isn't selfish. Or as my friend told me; 'You can't handle someone else's problems if you still have your own to deal with'. You just can't be there for someone so you have to take care of yourself first.

The most difficult thing there is in working on yourself is 'learning to love yourself'. Of course everyone will say that they do love themselves but try saying it in front of a mirror to yourself that you love yourself. That you love what you do, who you are, or worse, how you look like. It is damn hard, but it all starts with self acceptance. A stress free life starts with self love. I am nowehere near that I know but I'm working hard on it.
Try writing down the things your proud of or what you like about yourself.
I think I'm not a bad mum-no rephrase that; I'm a great mum! I do a hell of a job in not so great circumstances. I'm also a caring person (wanting to follow that with a 'but' but I won't)

Don’t punish yourself for wanting and needing the quiet moments. You’re human and taking care of yourself is as important as that next pay cheque or keeping in touch with all your friends in real life and/or social media. You are not selfish, you deserve it.

Menopausal crankiness

I would have never believed it to be true or would dismiss it; I'm not cranky and what if I were? It's not because I'm in menopause (started when I was 39 so for almost 10 years now so what's the big deal?) hell no, I'm doing just fine thank you.
But (as my mum sometimes 'subtly' puts it) I seem to have a history with being down at times. I take things very personally too, can't help it, I have a low selfesteem ever since I was a teen and being bullied for years. (working on that) So when I had a 'thing' at work with coworkers I made it bigger than it was in my head. So big in fact that my health was at risk. My epilepsy was acting up big time which is not a good thing when I'm working at an elderly's home. Thankfully they are only smaller seizures but still very annoying. My mind was working overtime thinking and overthinking why it was that they didn't like me or what I had done wrong. (which was nothing, all in the head)

Yesterday we had a team meeting and when my foreperson started a discussion about the subject everyone was very surprised at what I was thinking. I had made things so much bigger and worse than they were. Nothing was going on, only in my head it was. From a small thing with one coworker I had made it into 'nobody likes me'... (it's a bit more complicated than that but I'm not going into more details here) It didn't make any sense to me until one coworker said she had experienced the exact same thing a few years back (meanwhile she was waving a piece of paper in front of her for cool air so we were in the same boat so to speak)
She felt down all the time, forgot everything, kept overthinking things and she said; 'It's the damn menopause'.
I never wanted to believe that or I really never had thought about it to be honest. But it made a lot of sense. She said I had to clear my head more, walk outside more, do more things for myself by myself just to clear that full head of all those thoughts.

If I see that list I can name almost 20 which I seem to have; the worst being itchy, mood swings, irritability, trouble sleeping, anxiety, faulty memory, achy joints, muscles, tense muscles, weight gain, clammy feeling and the hot flashes and night sweats. The past week sore breasts joined happily along with them. So waiting on the rest of the list to join in... Thankfully my period has gone for good so that's the one good thing about it! I don't see restless legs syndrome on there but it should! God that's annoying! And the itchy thing... when I finally sleep I wake up from scratching my head because it has gotten so dry and itchy!
Menopause; and to think I'm only 48.... darn...
*breathe in, breathe out*

We have to see the humour in it somehow, somewhere...
Anyone?

I am what I am

All my life people told me the exact oposite of the quote above; I wasn't supposed to speak so loud, not laugh so hard, not be present too much etc etc... I probably have some kind of ADHD but was never tested so people/family everyone put their two cents in to try and mould me into a person they thought was how you should be. Or rather their version of how I should be.

A lot has happened to me along the years, in life I mean. I got bullied over a period of a year or two, three maybe. I was (still am to be honest) a very insecure person. Insecurities are often loud, confidence is silent. People often don't take the time to get to know a person but they do judge them.
When people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up I always said I wanted to be a mum. I never knew what kind of profession I wanted; A mum was all I wanted to become. My mum did a pretty good job of it, so why couldn't I become one. Because you don't get paid to be one perhaps.

Kids don't judge you, you're their mum, you are the way you are. If you have insecurities they don't see them when they're small and when they're older they do whatever is in their power to help you with them. My boys love me for who I am, they don't mind that I have a loud voice or that I sometimes snap because I am feeling anxious. They know how I am.
So does my family, hub, mum and sis.

But coworkers that's something entirely different. When I met my ex and went to live with him I had to find a job. A job comes with coworkers and they don't always take the time to get to know you or take you as you are. I worked in an office with a lot of other women. When I tell you that working with only women is the worst I'm not telling you anything a lot of other women don't know. Women together can be very gossipy (if that's a word) and spiteful. I don't get that, I'm certainly not like that at all! I've worked in several offices, in shops and realised that was not for me. I couldn't do that for the rest of my life. Being someone who I'm not. Thankfully I got pregnant and my real job began.

But when I got a divorce years later I had to get a job again. So I started to clean in elderly people's homes. No direct contact with other coworkers not much anyway, just with elderly peeps and those people are the best! They have the life experience, the stories, the warmth... and yes, most of them take you for who you are. I am loved by them and I don't have to change who I am.
Until yesterday I thought I was doing wonderfully; yesterday my foreperson wanted to have a chat.
My coworkers couldn't handle the way I was when we had meetings.
Not again, I thought.
We had a long talk in which I explained to her about why I am what I am. Why I am insecure, about the autistic men in my life, about what I have gone through to get where I am now.

But when I got home I really was pissed; What right do they have to talk about me behind my back (in a meeting whilst I had my holiday) when I am nothing but honest with everyone. I have explained to everyone why I can't fill in as much as they do. Why I get seizures sometimes (if my plate is too full) and what is making me me. Besides, don't I have a right to some privacy? Do I have to lay it all on the table for coworkers to understand why I sometimes behave the way I do?
No, they want me to change... And I'm done with changing for others.

I've been through hell and back, I've been through bullying, through death of loved ones, through beeing silenced for two years of my life by my then husband, followed by a divorce and depressions, I live with a partner with autism and a son who denies having it (but does), I have lost friends, I sometimes feel very very alone, and I have to do a lot by myself... This is MY life!
I refuse to change for anyone anymore!

I am who I am, take it or leave it!

Lacking inspiration

Writing is a thing I love a lot. I was going to do it lots more than I'm doing now. I promised myself I would . But I'm lacking inspiration or as I'm telling myself; I'm lazy.

A lot of people are making travel plans, write about it cheerfully but with our current financial state we just can't travel or do other things for that matter. It's nothing to be ashamed of, lots of people can't go away but it's something I a saddened about to be honest. I miss to travel to the UK and Scotland. To sniff up other cultures if only for a little while.
But on the other hand I am quite content in my little corner of the world and maybe that's just it; Maybe that's just what I don't need, to be content or having become a stay-at-home.
It is what it is, it has become a very small world indeed, your own little (very safe) corner of the world. For now it's all I need or want and are content with.

Just a calm excistance is nice. Not the hectic life with a lot of stress I once had. I find that stress does weird things with my body. I get more tiny seizures of epilepsy if there's been a stressful period. So avoiding stress and being in my own little corner of the world is just right, right now.

Namasté.

Music on Sunday; Be Yourself

As I was standing in front of my closet today wondering what I should wear for visiting family; I was again doubting myself; wondering if I was ever going to learn to just be myself. If myself was ever going to be good enough. Not only for myself but for my family as well. They say it is but when I'm there I get remarks like; don't talk so loud, don't laugh so hard, you can be yourself but not so much of yourself, tone it down a bit. How am I ever going to be confident enough when I get comments like that from the people I love the most? If they who know me the best don't even think I'm good as I am....

So today for this Music on Sunday music about being yourself; for a boost for myself and all those who feel like that as well.

Choices

My son said to me recently; 'some people do something with their lives, mum, instead of sitting home all the time'. I know he didn't mean it like it sounded, but it made me think. Do I mind this live I have chosen for myself? Sometimes I do, sometimes I did wish I could do more, go out more, travel more. But... and there is the big and ugly but... I just can't. For most people it is unimaginable the life hub and I lead, staying in so much, not going out and do stuff. But most of the time it's just a question of money. I really would love to travel more, see more, do more. Plus I'm not so comfortable anymore around people.

But I'm also disappointing myself; I'm not writing as much as I want anymore; I'm not studying enough. I'm not listening to my body, in short; I'm sitting in my comfortable bubble at home locking myself in it. I feel like my gran, only she had a mild case of autism in hindsight. She didn't go out anymore in the last years of her life. She didn't want to see other people but her family. I know it's not good, but I don't want to change is just yet. I don't know why; there will be a time I'm sure that it will be changed. Of course I go out; I go to work every day, meet people there, meet my co workers. Meet up with my family go to them by train. Hub and I go to a museum now and again. That must be enough for now. What son probably doesn't understand (which maybe hurt most of all) is that he made a comparison between his dad and me. His dad going to all kind of things and I'm not. His dad who didn't pay his wages, didn't put his two cents in when it came to his children. I'm doing all the paying with my meazily salary.

There you go; after all this time (almost 10 years) one tiny remark from my son can still get to me. Can still give me the feeling of anger, annoyance, of helplesness. Maybe not even that; maybe just; I should have done it differently so that I could have had it better now. But I should have is too late, it doesn't help. Why can't I let go of that? Why does it irritate me so how he spends his money other than on his/our children? I don't know but I really should stop it! It's not helping me and returning to my innerpeace which I have lost once again.

Bit crude but yeah; that quote says it all really.

Letting go is easily said. Practicing mindfulness too; chancing your life is hard to do. Changing yourself is even harder. But I'm constantly trying... no matter what everyone is saying.

Getting worried over 'nothing'...

Ever since I can remember I tend to worry or get anxious over things no matter how small or big. They may not be big, they get bigger inside my brain. I've tried to ignore it or get over it but it won't go away. I've tried to give the things to worry over into the hands of others meaning my parents when I was a teen or my partner when I was married, that proved only that I never learned to deal with it myself. I learned to lock things away and ignore it like a good little ostrich normally does. I tried writing about things to relieve myself of the burden of worrying; that helped a bit; I was working on it at least. But as things go when you don't keep on working on it and start slacking the anxiety returns.

I sometimes worry about the tiniest of things. Which with my history of tiny epileptic seizures isn't the wisest thing to do. Stress can provoke those tiny seizures after all. Just last night when I woke up my mind automatically wonders to the things I was worrying about yesteray.
I was supossed to start my course from Monday but the book they sent I am to study was the wrong one. So I haven't started yet! I have a whole month for 2 lessons but still, I don't want to start with being behind already! It is material we already got at our job from our boss, a small course and I work with elderly people every day, so I don't expect it to be very difficult but still; it makes me feel uneasy to start with a delay.

The same with a thing I ordered online, a small thing concidering, but I paid for it and reading the email they sent it to an adress without a home number. Will it arrive? Will I get my money's worth? Why do I worry so much? It's so not worth it! I miss innerpeace, I need innerpeace!
I need to stop overthinking so much!
I know that if I let things go that they have a way to work out for themselves. If I know that, why can't I let it go more? I find it hard to meditate but maybe I need to practise that more as well. I'm finding myself a difficult and complicated person and very tiresome at times. Need to work on that too! Well.... a lot of work needed ; see? It helps writing it down. Right, need to blog more too!

Studying again

When I was 19 I was fed up with school. I didn't have a professional education but I was done. I didn't know what I wanted anyway so I went to work in all sorts of professions from administration to working in a shop. After a few years when I was married and wanted kids I stopped working. Back then people simply could do that.
Now I work with elderly people helping to clean their homes with them for 9 years already.
After 30 years I decided yesterday that I'm going back to studying.

I always thought of doing something, learning something but the thought of being in a classroom with young kids held me back. Yesterday when I was visiting my sis a client came into her shop and told her about a course she was doing. About elderly people and dementia and other things. She was so very enthusiastic about it that I thought that this was just the thing I had been looking for! It is fitting for my job and maybe one day I can move on from that (you never know with all the cutbacks these days after all) but let's first concentrate on this.

It's a step forward from where I left it off 30 years ago. I always put it off. It would come one day.
I think my dad is doing a happy dance on his cloud in heaven. He wanted more for me and always pushed me to do better and more and I always was reluctant to as a lot of teenagers are. Dad will think I've finally have seen the light. It's never too late I suppose. This is a start anyway.

Adult women with ADHD

When I was about 20 and already living on my own my dad once told me I had MBD after all. It was said like I should have already known that as a fact. I didn't of course. I didn't even know the terminology. My dad explained that when I was 7 there was an article in the newspaper about MBD and that things fell into place for him. He asked the doctor about it; 'Is it possible my daughter could have this?' The doctor answered 'yes it is' and that was that.

MBD stood for Minimal Brain Damage but later they changed that to Disfunction as damage was too severe. MBD is now ADHD.
I was never tested on it but on every rapport card there is a remark like;  She likes watching the birds more than pay attention or something simular. (I still do by the way; like watching birds)
My attention slipped many times, I am loud, at times very insecure,  I do think I have ADHD.

My whole life I've been told not to talk so loudly, not to laugh so hard, not to talk before it's my turn, to sit still, not to... etc.
It's not making you very happy when even at 48 you suddenly hear your family say to you to not talk so loud. I have no idea myself I do that at the time I am doing it but it is also very degrading to hear my loved ones say that to this day.

I have accepted myself for who I am; I'm still working on things but for the most part I've accepted myself.
It does hurt that you can't be yourself, that you have to mind every step you take or everything you say. Or even write because I'm sure that there will be a lot of comment (privately) on this blog. I have chosen to write it anyway; for myself but also for other women with ADHD who are having the same problem; not being able to be yourself even though you're an adult and around family is very hard and is something they need to accept. They are the ones who need to accept you for who you are, that you can't always help being loud, or notice being loud. It doesn't help that they feel the need to put you 'in your place'. They may not see it that way, it certainly feels that way!

Maybe this will help;

Decades of failing to recognize ADHD in girls has created a “lost generation” of women

Changing habits

New Year's resolutions are not for me; I've stopped with those a long time ago. I think if you want to change you can do so every hour of every day. You don't have to wait until the new year to do so. Often those resolutions fail because you really don't want to change anyway. It's expected of you to make changes so you make resolutions.

I started a while back with trying to change my habits. I wasn't happy with how I was feeling. Not only physically but mentally as well. I started eating healthier and with that I'm also feeling better. A few years ago I also started practising Mindfulness. Due to some things in my personal life that influenced the way I was reacting, I let loose of the Mindfulness which I started to feel really. It's not making me happy if I let go of it.
I'm on social media a lot (a thing that makes me happy, with a lot of online friends) but I have found that reacting to negative people (on social media or in real life) doesn't do a lot of good. I need to stop myself before reacting; take a step back, breathe and think 'is it worth the fuss? Is it worth to react to it, to let it get on my nerves?'. If the answer is no (which it usually is) then don't react.

Life is too short to let people get on your nerves. In real life but also on social media. Life's supposed to be enjoyed. You're the one who can change it, the way you react. Do what feels right. Take away all negativity and start with only to allow the positive in and you will start to feel better. I sure am.

The end of comfort zones is overrated.... or is it?

We are the author of our own lives or at least we could be. Sometimes life just happens beyond our control. The happily ever after you were seeking was just right there at your grasp. If only you dared to take it, take the risk, take that control or if only that person wouldn't have taken over. Blaming someone else for your own mistakes is ever so easy to do. We are letting that person take over or do we?

But is that the real truth or what we believe ourselves to be the truth?
Do we fool ourselves every day by looking in the wrong mirror? The one with the false image of what life really is. Are we deluding ourselves time and again? Or give ourselves false hope? Do we wish upon that star for Prince Charming only to get the wicked witch in the end? If we look in that mirror what do we see? Hope? True love? Or delusion and despair?

What if we were to write our own stories without interference from anyone else, from the outside world, from that picture of how we are supposed to be or better yet; from the fears created by our own minds; how would that story then turn out to be? Would we blossom, would we risk everything for that one dream; or would we still live our everyday life, go with the flow of every day, day in day out, week in week out.
Would we dare to stand out in a crowd, be different, choose different? If we could do it all over again, would we live our lives the same? Or better yet; what if money wasn't an option, what if we could be whatever, whenever; would we? Do we have it in us to be something or someone else, do something completely different than what we are doing right now? In short; would we dare to be who we want to be? It's really all about stepping out of our comfort zone. It's easy to tell people life starts where your comfort zone ends but it's not that easy to do, is it?

We are told not to step out, not to be different, to mind the neighbours even, walk in a straight line like everyone else. It's how a lot of us has been raised. How difficult is it to change that! How hard is it to change into our true self! Money aside (which is even harder because everything needs money these days) if we want to become someone closer to our true self; someone who wants to explore the world, help others, help ourselves along the way, we will have to leave a lifetime behind. Leave our past life and/or people. Are we willing to do just that?

The end of comfort zones is sometimes overrated.
Sometimes staying inside ones comfort zone can be very... well comforting. And maybe just maybe one day that day will come where we will find that courage to dip that toe outside our comfort zone and feel how it is on the outside. Taking babysteps. Not everyone is brave enough to plunge ahead and wade through immediately.

One day...

Head explosion

It's happening again; my head is working overtime. It's on the verge of exloding so it seems. Even in the middle of the night, when I wake up to go to the bathroom, it is never quiet. Even then I am thinking all kind of things at the same time. I want to scream at my brain to stop doing that, to be quiet for once. I notice that I'm rambling at clients too, I am louder than I am supposed to be. Even when I want to try to meditate my mind isn't giving me a break, nope, it's going on and on and on... there is no stillness.

I was in a good place, doing what felt right to my body, eating more healthy feeling better and when I let it go a little I suddenly started feeling anxious again. When I looked for a quote just now and found the one above I thought; that's it! My mind is bullying my body again. It is used to eating all this crap and when I started doing what is best for me and let that go a little bit it started to act up again. I keep getting aches and pains again and my mind, my bloody mind isn't keeping quiet!
I have stopped listening to myself again. Crap, it's so simple sometimes and I did need this blog to start writing it down again, to come to this conclusion! How the mind works...

I need to let go of the old me again. I need to keep working on it, to better myself. I was on the right path, but things, every day life, keeps yanking me of my path. I shouldn't let it, but it happens. I need to stay on my path no matter what! I have chosen this path because it is the right thing to do. I haven't even given myself time to sit and relish in the wonderful things this season is giving me. I adore Autumn and every Autumn I say to myself; I need to enoy the turning of the leaves this time, I need to walk in the woods and soak it up. But it never happens! I watch it from my window which is the saddest thing ever.

So as soon as I have posted this blog, I am going outside and kick in the autumn leaves, enjoy nature. Find myself again. Calming my mind. And hopefully it will be silenced. Before my head will explode.
